Opis i ciljevi projekta

This project suggests designing one central databank for information on media ownership in 12 member states of the European Union. These countries complement the 15 EU countries under scrutiny in EurOMo (Connect/2020/7319235). Four groups of indicators (legal, economic, performance, technical) will feed into the central database, which is scalable and accessible online, and available by the end of the project EurOMo15. The theoretical approach is based on the structural ownership and on principal-agent theory. Methodological triangulation helps reducing the complexity of the project.
The general objective of the EurOMo is to design a searchable and scalable database to provide all relevant information about media ownership in Europe (relevant owners, cross-industry and country ownership, different ownership forms, influence in newsroom’s work, market concentration, lack of ownership transparency, among others). At the end of the second pilot project, we will be able to present a full database with the most relevant information on media ownership in the 27 EU Member States. Our database not only systematises and displays public information in the specific areas described above, but also indicates missing information. This will provide policy-makers and the broader public 43 with solid evidence of the extent of media ownership transparency in the EU, fulfilling the main objective of this Call.
