Opis predmeta:
Film aktualizira središnja politička i društvena pitanja glede naših stavova o životu općenito i zajedničkom životu s drugima, o prijetnjama našem načinu života, prelasku granica tradicije i postojećih društvenih praksi, razumijevanju neprijatelja i ljudske prirode, političkim i etičkim sporovima, idealnim institucijama ili utopijskim i distopijskim političkim vizijama. Dakle, film općenito, a posebno (znanstveno) fikcijske pripovijesti, pridonose boljem razumijevanju političkog života.

Dear students,

At the end of this online semester in which we were unable to have normal classes and where due to the corona crisis and the Zagreb earthquake many of you left the city, or even the country going back home, I wish to thank all of you who were enthusiastic in writing your weekly responses and enjoying in watching and thinking about films. Of course, the whole experience is quite different as you were not able to discuss and exchange ideas during our classes and this is why one of the author that we were discussing, Giorgio Agamben, recently wrote a very critical post to denounce what might be a "new normal" - the online teaching as a learning paradigm. Anyway, the situation happened to be as it is and everyone were trying to accomodate the best to this new conditions. What will happen during the next academic year is hard to predict, but we should all hope to return back to our institutions and enjoy learning exchange that can be fully obtained in our classrooms. With this hope in mind I wish you all the best with your exams and studying in the future.

This brings us to our final exam next week. Similarly to the midterm, you will get questions for the final next Thursday afternoon with the alloted time frame for addressing them. The final will be covering themes and discussions from the midterm to the last lecture. For those of you who took the midterm this will be the chance to pass the course before the end of the semester and before the start of the examination period. If you didn't take the midterm and wish to take the final, this will count toward your grade, but your overall grade will be deducted for the percentage of the midterm grade. Similarly, if you do not take the final, you can pass the course but your overall grade will be deducted for the percentage of the final grade. Both ways can allow you to pass the course (having in mind that you have enough percentage from the presentation and the assignments. If you did not take the midterm, and do not plan to take the final, you will have the chance to pass the course during the examination period. Best of luck to all!

Kind regards,

Hrvoje Cvijanovic

Dear students,

Our Midterm exam is next Thursday on April 16th. In these circumstances it is not mandatory but I would encourage you to take it if possible rather than postpone it to the end of the semester and taking the full exam. The midterm exam is "take-home", i.e. you will get the questions related to the topics, movies, and readings we were dealing with up to now. I will put the Midterm question sheet on the Intranet and explain the way how to address these questions as well as how and when to submit your answers. Therefore, you can expect the midterm questions to be ready on Thursday April 16th around 5pm. As it was up to now, you will be able to select among all those movies listed and to be able to discuss at least one per session, of course with the appropriate readings related to the movie as well as to the general theme of discussion. All other instructions will be provided if necessary.

Also I want to say that your weekly responses/reviews, aside from the presentations, are taken to be your participation and discussion and thus I decided to grade them with 2 points each (instead of 1) and 2,5 each for the first two introductory assignements. Just keep writing them as you were doing up to now.

Finally, there are still some empty slots for presentations, however with only 4-5 movies to choose from. So, if you forgot to pick your presentation now is the the time since there will be no other movies or options for presentations after we fill the rest of these slots, so this might affect your grade, as you know.

Watch movies and write about them, do your presentations, as these are the only thing you should do at this point: enjoying while studying and while staying at home.

All the best,

Hrvoje Cvijanovic

Dear students,

I guess we were all shaken with those earthquakes that hit us on Sunday morning. First of all, I really do hope tht all of you are well and that you keeping up your spirit in these dystopian reality we live in. I know that it is really hard to stay focused these days but this is what we should do in order to continue to live normally as much as we can in these state of emergency. Our Faculty of Political Sciences building is damaged, as you probably know, and we will see in the days to come how bad it is. My computer is also wrecked in the earthquake as the shelves with the books fell down on it. I saved some materials from the disc but this might have an impact on the preparation of my lecture materials to you, although I'll do my best to figure out to transfer the stuff to other computer.

I just want to let you know that I put the readings for this Thursday (March 26th) online, and also that there are open slots for presenting some films (Alien/Aliens and American Psycho). Also, those who did not, please apply asap for other presentations as we will continue with this part of our online seminar. Many films are already taken. As for the assignments, it is the same as with your presentations. Please continue with them, you were doing great!

Anyway, the days to come will not be better. It's really hard to tell how the virus crisis will develop so we are likely to stay online. Please take the strident precautions while we are all in this emergency. As I wrote to you earlier, in this grim times the only good thing is that you can probably watch movies and series to the degree that cannot be compared if the situation would be normal. So, take the best from this situation and think about our predicament through movies.

Take care and stay safe,

Hrvoje Cvijanovic

Dear students,

Just to remind you that we should continue with our assignments, however, in these circumstances it means these assignements should be emailed to polscifi2020@gmail.com on the day of our meetings, i.e. for this week they are due March 19th, 11:59 PM (or until 23:59). This is the oportunity to watch as many films as possible, read, and to write good reviews by reflecting on the topics we are dealing with. All our potential discussion try to include into your written reflections. Stay safe and if you have any questions, send emails.

Best,

Hrvoje Cvijanovic

Dear students,

As you know, due to the global health crisis, the Government has suspended teaching in all educational institutions for two weeks (in some other institutions, perhaps in some of your countries, even more). However, we are obliged to maintain online education using the Intranet, for the beginning. I will try to post my powerpoint lectures on the intranet. As for the seminar, you should continue to apply and prepare for your presentations according to the syllabus. Your presentations should be also made in Powepoint and sent to our polscifi2020@gmail.com address and we will try to put them online as well so the other students can have access.

Take this crisis to reflect on the readings and films we are dealing with. Our meatings often discuss similar issues, or we are always at the intersection of several different problems that demand reflection of that sort. Use this time to read more and to invest more time in yourself and your education, but also take the health crisis seriously by keeping yourself safe and all those around you. Considering our class, we will be in touch in the days to come.

Take care,

Hrvoje Cvijanovic

Dear students,

First, my apologies for the technical problems that were out of my reach and hence, my inability to put the updated syllabus and readings to the intranet. As you would be able to see, such comprehensive syllabus is able to accomodate the majority of the topics and hopefully yours preferences to design the course on your own, as this syllabus suggests. Since, at this moment, we have the class approaching in a couple of days I would, however, encourage you to sign for the presentations for this Thursday May 12th. For now, the presentation on "Interstellar" is taken, but you can choose among few other options for this meeting by sending me an email. Of, course, all other movies for presentations and dates are still open so you can sign as well. We will take your preferences on the first come, first serve basis. So, in order to accomodate your choices with others, you should be grading your preferences by naming at least 3 movies (in order you prefer) you would like to present. Please send your preferences for other than this week meetings to Lea at polscifi2020@gmail.com.

Best,

Hrvoje Cvijanovic

Dear students,

In the materials you will find the book that discusses "Black Mirror" series. Please, select the episode from any season and pair it with the appropriate chapter from the book for your March 5th assignment.

As for the syllabus, since I have to make some changes and rethink my initial ideas, I hope it will be online by Monday.

Enjoy watching and reading about Black Mirror!

Best,

Hrvoje Cvijanovic
