Description:
The course elaborates functional, social/ societal, individual and territorial language stratification and the reflections of these processes on linguistic practices applied in mass-media, maily printed ones. The main focus of analysis is on the category of standard language variety (Standard Croatian) and its polifunctionality. The administrative and mass-media or the news registers are under special examination, especially the various forms and dynamics of their overlapping, mutual permeation and hybridization. Using examples drawn from actual media production, the interpretation focuses on the presence and functions, communicative as well as symbolic and identity-building ones, of the units from the whole range of language registers and available linguistic resources that writers encroaching upon in order to follow various strategies for linguistic stylization of mediated message. The central aim is to have students to built their awareness of language dynamics and expressive potential. They come to realize how the contextually conditioned choice of various registers units, most frequently lexical, morphological and phraseological, in the process of text making substantially contributes to the scope of information, to its connotations and metaphorical effects, and puts it in multi-layered socio-cultural, political and value system frames of interpretation and perception.
