DESCRIPTION:

The course "Political Systems of Central European and the Baltic Countries" includes political systems, politics and societies of six postcommunist Central European countries - Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia - and three post-Soviet Baltic states - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The aim of the course is to introduce students of undergraduate studies of political science and journalism with systems, actors and processes in the new European democracies that successfully finished transition after the fall of communist systems in Eastern Europe. This makes the main difference that separates those countries from the regime s "gray zone" that exists in most post-Soviet states where democratization has failed or has never even begun. Through lectures and seminars students will get knowledge about the historical legacy that preceded the establishment of new political systems in Central Europe and the Baltic, the way and contextual framework in which democratic transition began, the selection of new political institutions, the political processes and political culture in those countries. Empirical data that will be used in teaching will be analyzed through theoretical concepts of democratic transition, democratic systems and specific political subsystems: the system of government, the electoral system and the party system.
