DESCRIPTION:

The aim of this course is for students to learn and think critically about media policy and media regulation in a contemporary information environment in which modes of being informed are radically changing and it is increasingly difficult to answer the question: what is media? Through the analysis of key standards, actors, and trends, the aim of the course is to provide students with tools for understanding and evaluating key areas of media policy and regulation in Croatia, the European Union and the world. In addition to media pluralism, as a key concept of European media policies, the course will delve into topics of media ownership, market competition, public media, non-profit, local and community media, digital platforms, state subsidies for the media, the status and safety of journalists, social inclusion in the media, the role of the media in election campaigns, and the policies of media literacy. Another goal of the course is to present students with the basic characteristics of regulation and self-regulation and their relationship.
