DESCRIPTION:

The aim of this course is to offer a comparative study of electoral systems as one of the key areas of Comparative Politics and Political Science in general. Electoral systems are among the most important institutions in contemporary democracies. The most influential political scientists of our age have declare them "the most fundamental element of representative democracy" (Lijphart", "the most important part of the political system" (Sartori), but also potentially the most manipulated political tool (Taagepera and Shugart). In addition, Robert Dahl has pointed out that "probably no other political institution shapes the political landscape of a democratic country than its electoral system and its political parties". The purpose of this course is to equip students with fundamental knowledge about elections and electoral politics, and not just the institutional framework that sets the rules for the conducting of elections as such.
